“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?”
Jesus said to him, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
This is the greatest and most important commandment. The second is like it: ‘You must love your neighbor as yourself.’ (Matthew 22:36-40)
Founded in 1927, Fida International is the missions and development cooperation organisation of the Finnish Pentecostal churches.
We work in about 50 countries with around 190 employees and hundreds of volunteers. Our work is based on Christian values and a holistic view of man. The word ‘fida’ comes from Latin and means ‘faithful’ and ‘trustworthy’.
The holistic mission is based on the Golden Rule (Matthew 22:36–40). We address the various kinds of needs people have, be they mental, spiritual, physical or social. We believe that Christians and churches are called to serve and face the needs around them.
We want to share the good news about Jesus Christ with all nations, teach the Bible, and plant new churches that are financially, administratively and theologically independent.
We want to help our neighbours to break free from extreme poverty and empower them to influence the circumstances of their own lives. We work to build peace and to create conditions for a life with human dignity.
For almost a hundred years now, Fida and the Finnish Pentecostal churches have been involved in changing the lives of tens of millions of people for the better.
In Eastern Africa, our work has contributed to the founding of large Pentecostal denominations that now have several million members. In Latin America, our partner churches play a strong role in their societies.
We encourage our partners to work for the benefit of their community and to become active in speaking up for those who are the most vulnerable, such as HIV-positive people, children, disabled people, and women and girls.
We support our church partners’ theological education and training. We encourage and equip them so they can start their own missions and bring the message of hope to all nations.
Unity is an important value to us. We work in partnership with local denominations, churches and other non-governmental organisations, because together we will achieve more.
Fida has received support from the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs for its development cooperation projects since 1974. We currently have around 50 programmes in development cooperation, child sponsorship and humanitarian aid, and they extend to 22 countries.
Fida is a partner organisation in ECHO, the European Commission’s humanitarian aid office. We also collaborate with some UN organisations.
There are 241 Pentecostal churches in Finland, with a membership totalling some 50,000 (2013). Pentecostal denominations and churches are the largest and fastest growing section of Protestant Christianity with some 300–500 million members, depending on the method of calculation.
